Description -m- Item # 21001231

Leitz Leica If "Red Dial" body, with 3.5/50mm Elmar lens,
lens cap, "Bright-line" finder, and leather holster case.

This listing includes the following:

  1. CAMERA BODY:
Leitz Leica Model If, "Red Dial" type, serial number 577075.

While serial number allocation designates 1952/1953 production, this body was most likely made in early 1952. The top-plate is engraved "Leica D.R.P.", but does not have the "GmbH" marking that was mandated by German law starting around June 1952. Also engraved on the top-plate is "E. Leitz, Germany, Nr. 577075". Two accessory shoes on top-plate, take-up spool inside.

Cosmetically, this camera looks very good, however, it is NON-FUNCTIONAL. Prior to listing, I was able to get the shutter curtain to traverse only while depressing the shutter button and "helping" it along by manually rotating the shutter speed dial -- that worked a dozen times, and then it jammed (so the curtain does not traverse at all now). I suspect that at some point in its long life this camera was either wet, or stored at high humidity (there are a few tiny specs of rust ... on the acc. shoes, where the shutter button bezel meets the body, around the PC terminal, etc.) Condition of innards is unknown; your risk. Marked "#387", handwritten in pencil, inside on the back cover. Body with lens weighs in at 1 lb 2 oz.

Note: This body is also sometimes referred to as "Leica 1F", or "Leica I F".

  2. LENS:
"Red Scale" 3,5/5cm Elmar (f3.5/50mm) LTM, serial number 1048365 (dating it to 1952), with original metal Leica front lens cap. Aperture diaphragm and focus mechanisms are both smooth. No scratches on the front or rear elements, but there appears to be either some fungus and/or coating degradation/separation inside.

  3. FINDER:
Leitz 5cm "Bright-line" finder, model SBOOI.

  4. LEATHER HOLSTER:
Debossed Leica logotype on the front, and "E Leitz, Wetzlar, Germany" on the bottom. Leather "hinge" is torn/separated. About one-half of the stitching around the lens portion is missing.

CAREFULLY PACKED, DOUBLE BOXED, and ready to go; see the photos. Item is packed with silica gel dessicant pack(s) to prevent humidity damage in storage/transit. Note: Packing-photos show stages of packing this item; know that boxes are always full or slightly overstuffed with packing material to prevent any shifting or settling.
