Description -m- Item # 21001243

A spectacular bas-relief frieze... "Glory", made circa 1921 by the Pompeian Bronze Co, a pair of electroformed bronze-clad book ends, partial figural. Each bookend features a pair of gladiators on a chariot with four rearing horses, and a background of mountains and trees. Original polychrome paint in black, red/orange, green, and blue. Gorgeous patina consistent with age. Marked on the front: "P. Manfredi" (sculptor). On the back: "GLORY" and "Pompeian Bronze".

Rare ... "Glory", when found at all, is generally seen in the somewhat garish colors of sky blue background and orange gladiator clothing -- we think that the colors on this pair are just so much nicer! A great addition to your collection; theme, artistic design, colors, patina, and condition make this pair a real find.

Listed in a Library of Congress Copyright Office publication with the following entry: "Glory; by Peter Manfredi. Model of hook-end with relief showing warrior and charioteer in chariot drawn by four horses. © 1 c. Aug. 31, 1921"
