"Longfellow" Galvano Bronze Bookends
Big pair of the great American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, made circa 1925, probably by the Galvano Bronze Co, a pair of electroformed bronze-clad figural book ends featuring a bust of HWL, this pair has an absolutely gorgeous, dark, aged patina with verdigris highlights, particularly on the faces. Though unmarked, these bookends share a nearly identical design to plate 1469 in Kuritzky and De Costa, so this pair too was almost certainly made by the Galvano Bronze Co.
SPECS: Measures about 7.3" tall by 4.8" wide by 3.4" deep, the pair weighs in at 8 lbs 6 oz. "LONGFELLOW" on the front. Small flat spot on one of the two noses.
For the unfamiliar, here is Wikipedia on HWL:
"Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (February 27, 1807 - March 24, 1882) was an American educator and poet whose works include "Paul Revere's Ride", The Song of Hiawatha, and "Evangeline". He was also one of the five Fireside Poets ... born in Portland, Maine, then part of Massachusetts, and studied at Bowdoin College. After spending time in Europe he became a professor at Bowdoin and, later, at Harvard College."
Great poet, gorgeous verdigris patina.
