Made circa 1880s by the Prospect Hill Pottery Company of Trenton, New Jersey — which was operated by Dale & Davis — this late 19th century Victorian-era ironstone jardiniere (some might call it a planter urn or vase) is large and heavy at 12.5 inches tall and weighing more than 10 lbs. Nice even crazing all over, this fine antique jardiniere proudly proclaims its vintage and pedigree in any home setting — add a large bouquet of flowers and it will make a lovely table centerpiece.
Historically significant, Prospect Hill Pottery is one of Trenton’s famed pottery & porcelain works, helped the city earn the moniker: Trenton Makes, The World Takes.

The Lion and Unicorn mark is shown in Lehner’s Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain, and Clay (p. 359)

“The Dale and Davis Pottery was established in 1880, on Prospect Street, near the Bound Brook Railroad. Buildings were erected, and the pottery went into operation during that year. Opaque porcelain, white granite, and decorated ware are produced here. The pottery has six kilns, and employs one hundred and fifty hands.” — Woodward, E.M. and J.F. Hageman. 1883. History of Burlington and Mercer Counties.
The pottery works were operated by Dale & Davis until 1903, when the works were sold to the Cook Pottery Co. and became known as Cook’s Prospect Hill Pottery.
